Dear Jeff, I have a user who works on a workstation who complains that hsi root directory is filled with unwanted files beginning with DECW$. I told him that he needed to keep these files because they kept all of his DECWindows preferences. Now he asks "Is there any way to move them to another directory, so they won't appear in his root directory?" Jean McCallister |
Jean, I would assume he is either using a VAX
or using the old DECWindows interface on an Alpha, because
the Common Desktop environment that normally comes on an
Alpha already puts the stuff in a directory tree called
[username.DW...]. However for the VAX side, have your user
follow these steps while not logged into a workstation. A
Dumb terminal is best, however, if he can it's allright to
do it from DECWindows, it's just that he might have to reset
some of his window preferences and save them
again. 1. Go to his root directory, and create
the subdirectory [.DECW_DEF]. 2. Copy (not rename) all DECW$ files from
his root to the new directory via : 3. Edit the user's LOGIN.COM, and place
this line in a section that is executed by all MODES
: $DEFINE
DECW$USER_DEFAULTS
diskname:[username.DECW_DEF] 4. Log off and log into a workstation,
and delete all the DECW$*.* files in his root
directory. 5. Verify that all ofhis DECWindow
settings are correct. Now all files used by the old DECWindows
interface will nolonger be put into the root directory, but
will be placed into the new [.DECW_DEF]
subdirectory. Jeff
$COPY
DECW$*.*;0 [.DECW_DEF]*.*
